I fixed the kerning in a font and saved it, but the new font has the old kerning. I did select kerning in font options, as instructed in the guide. Why is this happening?
Thanks, Ellen

Is it possibly an font installation issue? (eg old font has not been removed properly before installing a new one) or can you see that the kerning has not been changed when you open the new font in Type 3.2?

Just opening the font in windows font viewer shows that it has the old kerning. I didn't even get as far as installing.

The thing with Windows font viewer is that even though you click on your modified font file, if it has the same internal name (ie font name / family name) as one that is installed, then the installed font will be previewed.
Uninstall the old font, then install the new one. Also, delete your old font from the windows/fonts folder to uninstall, do not rely on the message "Do you want to overwrite existing font?" when installing - it does not always work.
Just some things to be aware of when using Windows.

The font was not installed to begin with. And installing now doesn't change things. I have never seen a font's kerning not reflected exactly in Windows Font Viewer, the use of which has nothing to do with whether a font is installed or not. Plus, I changed the name so there would be no conflict.
Any font viewer that allows you to type in text also does not display the kerning changes.

I first have to eliminate that possibility - you would be surprised how many apparent 'bugs' are caused by the above.
If you have renamed the font (internally) or do not have the previous version installed, then no, it must be something else.
I need a bit more info to figure out what is going on. Can you email me (allanmurray@cr8software.net) the original and modified versions of the font, and tell me more specifically what you changed (or attemted to change eg which kerning pair/s).

Make sure that you have the kerning box ticked in font options (on the font menu) before saving your font. I recommmend that you also add OpenType kerning to your font. To do this: select OpenType features on the font menuselect insert selected featurestick kerningand make sure the OpenType is also ticked in font options. Also, in some applications kerning has to be applied, and is not always on by default. How to apply kerning in Word (section 3): chrismcmullen.wordpress.com/2014/04/15/kerning-in-microsoft-word/In Illustrator, make sure you have metric kerning selected, which is to use the kerning pairs in the font.
