New trouble with dotlessj in text preview; also won't kern

I have worked with dotlessj (U0237) fine in the past, but a new problem has cropped up.
In text preview it will not show up and gives the notdef character when &dotlessj; is used.
It seems to work fine when typing out the unicode in hex.
When I go to kern anything with it, it starts to pair ok with correct names, but then gives the error:
"There is no glyph mapped to unicode F6BE"

Any help would be appreciated.

...and on a whim I also mapped the glyph to F6BE and everything is working now (?).
Still, this workaround shouldn't be necessary.

...and on another whim, I tried deleting the duplicate mapping to F6BE...
no joy, it returns to not working.
