Would it be possible to add a couple of extra features so that when moving a selected contour, the movement will be parallel to the x or y axis, rather than moving in any direction? This would be extra useful for people like me, whose hand is not very steady, when making composite characters by hand.

Hi,
Type 3.0 is currently in development and includes a way to move selected points/contours in only the x or y direction, by a set amount etc.
Other new features include: - user defined composite glyph creation - ability to add OpenType features - open ttc (TrueType font collections) - view glyphlist in mapping window - change postscript names of glyphs - ability to run macros on a glyph or range of glyphs - better able to change glyph metrics and some other minor improvements.
Note that Type 3.0 is a major upgrade, not an update, and release is due the middle of this year. Any other suggestions are welcome.
Cheers, Allan Murray
